Purchasing Bulk Beef

By far the most economical way to purchase meat from us is by buying in bulk. Read below for some things to consider before buying.

Bulk Beef is available by the whole or half animal. The weight ranges and prices are approximates only. The final weight and price will vary with the size of the animal and the processing options. The average whole beef is 1000 lbs. live weight; our typical hanging weight is 500lbs to 600lbs. The final price range below reflects meat that has been cut, wrapped and frozen at a state inspected abattoir. It does not have a USDA-inspected label. The breakdown of cuts (by weight) is approximately 20-25% steaks, 20-25% roasts, with remainder in lean trim (ground beef, stew meat, etc.

Here are some things to consider about bulk buying:

Have you tried the product?

We are happy to fill a bulk order for you, but if you have never eaten any grass finished meats, you may wish to order the 1/4 size to make 100% sure that you like them and understand how to cook them. Typically lower heat, some cuts will need added moisture (with premium dry-aged beef, you are not buying added water or mystery solutions.) Bear in mind, however, that every beef is going to be different primarily because of the variety of forages available throughout the year.

Do you have enough freezer space?

A whole beef will take up approximately 15 cu ft of freezer space. (The inside of a milk crate is approximately 1 cubic foot).  One thing to consider is that the savings by purchasing a whole beef vs purchasing a 1/4 four times, will nearly buy a new basic freezer.

No worries if you don't know how to have the meat cut. You will be contacting the butcher directly and he will kindly walk you through the process and give you all of your options!

While we will do our best to provide you with an estimate, we have no way of knowing the final cost until the meat has been processed. We do understand the frustration of trying to budget, but we simply have no way of knowing specifics until the carcass is weighed at the processor.

The price is dependent upon the weight of the animal. A live beef can weight between 825-1000 pounds. Obviously, a smaller beef will cost less, but will have less weight, a larger beef will cost more, but you will get more. This is why the information above regarding cost and amount is presented as a range.
